The Story Behind Our Farm Gate

We’re delighted to be able to say that our Farm Gate now opens during the winter truffle season, giving visitors the chance to experience a true taste of the harvest here in Flinders.

A farm gate dream come to life

The Flinders Truffles Farm Gate is a seasonal stop on the Mornington Peninsula where visitors can discover fresh black truffles, truffle products and simple farmgate favourites during the winter harvest. It's a way for us to share what we grow, what we love and what makes this brief season so special.

From the orchard to the farm gate

Harvest usually begins in winter, with Lucy, our beautiful hunting dog, leading the search.

Last year we also brought in some professional and more experienced hunting dogs, mainly to ensure Lucy hadn’t missed any, being a young dog. It was reassuring to see she’d done a really thorough job.

That said, we still may get more dogs in to help again this year, depending on the size of the crop and how Lucy goes with concentration and stamina. Hopefully it’s a big job!

Our aim is to get Lucy to a place where she doesn’t just find truffles but can hunt out only the mature ones. We know this will take a lot more training and discipline but it’s good to have truffle goals!

Fresh truffles, lifted that morning

Visitors to the Farm Gate are greeted by the farmers and growers, then shown the truffles unearthed and lifted that morning.

We’re hoping for an array of different sizes and aromas to suit every palate. Truffles will then be weighed and sold. We’ll share storage instructions and some simple recipe ideas for enjoying them at home.

For us, this is the joy of the Farm Gate: sharing the winter harvest at its seasonal best, straight from our soil to your kitchen.
