frequently asked questions

Planning your truffle hunt often comes with a few practical questions, so we’ve answered the most common ones. If you have any others, please get in touch.

When is truffle season?

Truffle hunts take place during the cooler months from June through August, when black winter truffles reach their peak. This is the only time of year the orchard opens for hunts and fresh harvest experiences.

Where are the truffles grown?

Our truffles are grown here in Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula, beneath rows of hand planted French oak trees. People often mistake them for olive trees, but it’s the oak roots below the surface that make truffle growing possible.

How long does a truffle hunt last?

Please allow around three hours for your truffle hunt experience and aim to arrive 15 minutes before your allocated time. This includes an introduction to truffle farming, time in the orchard with the dogs and an opportunity to enjoy truffle-inspired winter menu by the fire afterwards.

Will we really find truffles?

Yes. Our trained truffle dogs locate ripe truffles beneath the soil during the hunt, and guests can watch as they are carefully unearthed from the orchard.

Why do you use dogs instead of pigs?

While pigs were traditionally used in parts of Europe, most truffle farms now work with specially trained dogs. Dogs are easier to guide, gentler around the orchard and much less likely to eat the truffles they find. Our Lagotto Romagnolo dogs, Lucy and Enzo, have an incredible sense of smell and genuinely love the hunt.

Do we get to taste truffles?

Yes, guests gather to enjoy a seasonal winter menu featuring truffle-infused dishes like soul-warming soup and our signature truffle cheese toasties.

Can we buy fresh truffles on the day?

Yes, Fresh truffles are available to purchase during the season, along with other farmgate favourites.

Is the experience suitable for children?

Families are very welcome. Children often love meeting the dogs and watching them at work, making it a memorable experience for all ages.

What should we wear?

Truffle hunts take place outdoors in the orchard, so we recommend comfortable clothing and closed shoes suitable for walking through the fields.

Are private group bookings available?

Yes. Private truffle hunts can be arranged for corporate groups, celebrations and special occasions. Please contact us to discuss availability and options. Group size starts at 10+ people.
